Sobering Spartan Episode 1 – Guilty Pleasures
By Ian Forbes
[8] Comments

Hear ye! Hear ye! The Sobering Conclusion’s own Ian Forbes (me) has teamed up with Robert Patrick (him) from Cinema Spartan to create the Sobering Spartan podcast. These two intrepid film critics will deliver a monthly rant on whatever gets their pie holes flapping (eww) and the very first is now upon us.
For the debut of the show, we have chosen to discuss our favorite cinematic guilty pleasures. Also, we talk a little about “The Social Network”, “Catfish”, Andrew Garfield and Rebecca Hall. As a bonus to those listeners who have come of age, there’s even a drinking game that can be had when listening to this. Every time you hear me say “fantastic”, take a sip. (I seriously need to improve my diction.)
Please give it a listen and let us know how were doing!

You’re dead on about the quality of that Double Team finale. Sammo Hung choreography with Jet Li stunt double Xin Xin Xiong and Jackie Chan protege Mars. Among Tsui Hark’s worst films, but all HK directors had to do time making Van Damme vehicles in Hollywood at the time – John Woo, Corey Yuen Kwai, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark. Builds character, in only one sense. Part of the fine Hollywood tradition of stealing post-colonial foreign talent as spoils of war.

Wow … your analysis is about 2000 IQ points higher than my four favorite Van Damme films.
Thanks for listening, Trent!

Trent is rad. Thank you so much, my good sir!

Robert Patrick had a horrible list with nothing being a guilty pleasure. One film has been out 2 weeks, another is loved by about 50% of the population, and another is a generic indie comedy that does not standout enough to warrant an opinion in the first place.
However, the mere mention of Elizabethtown is offensive.

I just realized that I forgot to include “The Room”. I feel shame and will punish myself accordingly. Also, my profile lists my favorite guilty pleasure as “Rad”. It was a last minute decision to use “Megaforce” instead for the show. Again, I feel shame and will punish myself accordingly. I hope to do better for everyone on future shows. Now onto the punishment … where the hell is my bottle opener?

To begin with, I love the music at the beginning. It lends a real air of professionalism…you know…if you picked any other song on planet Earth. I am pretty sure that is the theme music to any potentially epic (or in this case not epic at all) event ever.
As far as guilty pleasures go, I love the fact that Robert’s list was every menstruating woman or homosexual male’s wet dream (which by the way has me questioning Robert’s sexuality now). Elizabeth Town? I would rather watch the animated Titanic movie. If you don’t know what I am referring to, youtube it and get back to me when your eyes stop bleeding. Ian’s list read like when a teenager discovers his first boner. Jean Claude Can Damme? Are you kidding me? His acting is more wooden than what you would get if Keanu Reeves had offspring with a piece of plywood. The guy is not only a joke, he is a bad joke. A joke that makes babies cry.
That said, you should both feel very guilty about your choices because you have committed a crime against your audience and frankly, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
All that said, I love you both and look forward to the next episode.

Thank you? Yes, thank you! I’d say you summed it all up appropriately. I hope the next one only adds to our shame.

You are very welcome. I expect only the most shameful podcast imaginable, hence my chomping at the bit for the next episode.
