It’s baaaaack! Running from Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 24 at the San Diego Convention Center, the 2011 Comic-Con once again gives fans the chance to find out about all the hot new films, TV shows, comics and any related merchandise. Looking at the schedule, here are the film related highlights of the convention. For a full schedule, visit where you can even personalize your own time table.

Thursday, July 21: Hobbit Talk
10:00am – 11:00am @ Room 7AB
Clifford Broadway (Quickbeam) and Larry D. Curtis (MrCere) of will be discussing the two Hobbit films’ production. This panel doesn’t come from the studio so the info will be a mix of released material, rumors, and opinion. Surprise guests are a possibility; audio and visuals are given with a Q&A.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1
11:15am – 12:15pm @ Hall H
Summit Entertainment presents a sneak peek at “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1″. There will be exclusive footage from the film, as well as a filmmaker and cast Q&A session providing details on the first half of the epic two-part finale. Expect a packed house so if you want to get in, get downtown EARLY. It’s likely a number of the Twi-hards will leave afterwards so don’t be too disheartened if you’re in line for the rest of the days’ events in Hall H.

Focus on Rick Baker
12:15pm – 1:00pm @ Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Rick Baker, the multi-Oscar winning makeup effects artist, will provide fans with an overview of his career, with an emphasis on his work with director Barry Sonnenfeld on “Men In Black 1 & 2″, as well as a first look at some of his creatures and makeup for the upcoming “Men In Black 3″. Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex will be on hand to facilitate the discussion.

Animation Showcase
12:45pm – 1:15pm @ Hall H
Sony Pictures Animation shows off two of its upcoming 3D films. Producer Peter Lord and co-writer Peter Baynham discuss “Arthur Christmas”, which attempts to answer the age-old question of how Santa delivers all those presents in just one night. Lord will also talk about “The Pirates! Band of Misfits”, which he is both producing and directing. Centered around the quest to win Pirate of the Year, the film features an all star voice cast (Hugh Grant, ,Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Imelda Staunton, David Tennant).

FilmDistrict Studio Panel
2:00pm – 3:00pm @ Hall H
FilmDistrict will be featuring two of their upcoming features: “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”, a Guillermo Del Toro production starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce; and “Drive”, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, and Christina Hendricks. Exclusive footage will be presented and a Q&A will be held for both films.

20th Century Fox
3:15pm – 4:30pm @ Hall H
20th Century Fox will be previewing upcoming 2011 and 2012 features. No official word on which films will be highlighted or who will be there to promote things as of yet but the safe bet is that “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” will be a part of it.

Robert Rodriguez’s Quick Draw Productions

Robert Rodriguez will be on hand to present Quick Draw studio’s new slate of films featuring special guest collaborators. He will also show exclusive material from his latest top-secret project.

Harry Potter Fandom Panel

Just how big of a muggle are you? Well, if your answer included some variation of accio anywhere in it, then maybe you should check out the Harry Potter Fandom panel. Melissa Anelli (The, Harry – A History), Kathryn Mudgway (International Quidditch Association), Joey Richter (“Ron” in A Very Potter Musical/Sequel), Andrew Sims (Mugglenet,, Andrew Slack (, Imagine Better), and moderator Heidi Tandy (FictionAlley, Ascendio2012/HPEF) will be there to discuss the films, books, theme park, and so much more.

History of the Modern Zombie

Experts discuss the history and evolution of the modern zombie, from its first appearance in George Romero’s 1968 classic “Night of the Living Dead” to the most recent work being done in zombie science, survival, and pop culture today. The Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza is back for its 14th annual event. First in the program will be the World Premiere of “Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Movie”, plus exclusive trailers of 2012 releases. Also, Ric Meyers (Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Book) will also have the coolest fight scenes from the best 2011 films, as well as his usual array of surprise guests and freebies.

H.P. Lovecraft in Comics and Film

Explore a few of the works influenced by the Great Old Ones and get a sanity-smashing peek into the latest comics and movies inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft. Friday, July 22:

Star Trek: The Captains

William Shatner is joined by fellow Star Trek captain Avery Brooks to present a preview of the EPIX Pictures original documentary produced and directed by Shatner, in which he travels the world to interview all the actors who’ve played Starfleet captains. This discussion and Q&A session is moderated by Comic-Con fave Kevin Smith.

Paramount: The Adventures of Tin-Tin

Paramount Pictures will be building excitement for the upcoming Steven Spielberg film, “The Adventures of Tin Tin”. (update 7/14 director Steven Spielberg will be one of the guests at the panel)

Relativity Media: Raven and Haywire

Relativity Media will be showing off “Raven”, a thriller in which Edgar Allan Poe joins forces with a young Baltimore detective to hunt down a mad serial killer starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe, Luke Evans, and Alice Eve; directed by James McTeigue. Also on display will be Gina Carano and director Stephen Soderbergh from “Haywire”, where a female covert ops specialist strikes back after discovering she’s been double-crossed.

Legendary Pictures: Preproduction Preview

Legendary Pictures holds its first-ever Comic-Con panel and shares an early look at some of the movies on the company’s upcoming film slate. Hear from filmmakers and cast members from the upcoming “Pacific Rim”, “Seventh Son”, “Paradise Lost”, and “Mass Effect”. Panel participants include Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Guillermo del Toro, Ben Barnes, Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Alicia Vikander, Alex Proyas, Sergei Bodrov, Travis Beacham, Mark Protosevich, and Casey Hudson.

Screen Gems: Underworld 4 and Attack the Block

Screen Gems has two movie previews to show off. “Underworld 4″ will see humans trying to eradicate vampires and Lycans alike. Appearing in person are Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, producer Len Wiseman, and directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein. Then from the producer Edgar Wright comes “Attack the Block”, which follows a gang of tough inner-city kids who try to defend their turf against an invasion of savage alien creatures. Along with Wright, director Joe Cornish will also be on hand.

DreamWorks: Fright Night

Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Imogen Poots, Dave Franco, director Craig Gillespie, and screenwriter Marti Noxon take the dais to give fans a taste of the horrific fun to come in DreamWorks Pictures’ 3D reimagining of the classic horror film, “Fright Night”.

Comic-Con is giving some up and coming genre filmmakers an chance to hype their upcoming films in Hall H a la a virtual Drive-In theater. First up is “Grave Encounters”, about the crew of a ghost-hunting reality show who find themselves trapped in a mental hospital. Written and directed by The Vicious Brothers, who will be on hand. Then comes “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil”, where two friends are mistaken for backwoods murderers by a group of preppy college students. (Director Eli Craig and stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine confirmed as panelists).

In collaboration with a highly skilled art department, the production designer lays out the designs that will guide a small army of decorators, carpenters, sculptors, painters, and artisans of all sorts, to bring into existence those fantastic worlds that fire everyone’s imagination. Further over the Rainbow: A First Look at Dorothy of Oz

Join the author and creator, Roger Baum (great grandson of L. San Diego International Children’s Film Festival

The 8th annual San Diego International Children’s Film Festival opens today, with more than 60 short films from around the world — animation, live action, and documentary — that are great for film fans of all ages. Animators, filmmakers and actors will appear throughout the day to talk about their work and give advice on education and creative careers in film and animation.

Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz Premiere Screening
3:30pm – 4:30pm @ Room 6A
Coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on August 23, 2011, “Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz” sees Tom and Jerry join Dorothy, Toto, and other beloved characters in a new animated retelling of the classic tale. Here’s your chance to see it first!

The Holocaust Through the Eyes of a Child, Animated by a Child

Bill Plympton (two-time Oscar-nominated animator), 11-year-old animator and child film critic Perry Chen, his mother Dr. Zhu Shen (producer), Karina Bessoudo (Toon Boom Animation, vice president of marketing and communications), and Kevin Sean Michaels (director) share insight and a sneak preview of the film “Ingrid Pitt: Beyond The Forest” and the cross-generational collaboration that was formed to create it. The short animated film illustrates the miraculous true story of the late actress Ingrid Pitt (“Where Eagles Dare”) who, in 1945, escaped at age 8 from a Nazi concentration camp in Poland to later become one of the UK’s biggest movie stars. Also screening will be a trailer for the new documentary on animator Bill Plympton, “Adventures in Plymptoons!” Moderated by Pat Swinney Kaufman (executive director for the New York State Governor’s Office for Motion Picture & Television Development) and Lloyd Kaufman (president/co-founder of Troma Entertainment).
