The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook
by Dinah Bucholz

Although it’s a slight departure from film reviews, letting go of Harry Potter is harder for some (me) than others (most of you). But for all those muggles out there who want to jazz up their next Harry Potter event with a few edible treats, author Dinah Bucholz has some ideas. In The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, Bucholz lays out over 150 receipes inspired by the boy wizard’s journeys.

As the book is unauthorized, you won’t find the official recipes for items you might find in Orlando at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park. Most disappointing was a lack of an attempt at Butterbeer, but you will find ideas on Molly Weasley’s meat pies, Treacle Tarts, Pumpkin Pasties, and many other items all with some loose connection to the franchise.

Pumpkin Pie

If you want to be cynical about it, the cookbook is really just an American’s take on British staples. You’ll find recipes for Shepherd’s pie, Spotted Dick, Bangers and Mash, and even Haggis. Bucholz’s strength lies in the dessert field and although many of the items aren’t exact matches for items in the films, amateur pastry chefs everywhere will get a kick out of things like Peppermint Humbugs, Sugar Mice, and Fizzy Sherbet Pouches.

Chocolate and Raspberry Ice Cream Cones with Chopped Nuts

So from a strict Harry Potter standpoint, this cookbook leaves much to be desired. However, if you’re looking to take a stab at British cuisine and enjoy the books/films, this is a lovely item to pick up to scratch both itches. There are even some interesting trivia bits that go along with each recipe, for all you random trivia nuts out there. You can find the book just about everywhere (here’s a link to the book’s website) and should you decide to make any of these items, feel free to let us know how it turned out in the comment section (we’ll even taste test if you ask nicely).
